• Company History

  Thorntons have been crafting chocolate for more than 100 years, since travelling confectioner Joseph William Thornton opened a sweet shop in Sheffield in 1911.

  Carrying on with his day job, he entrusted the shop to his 14-year-old son, Norman, telling him to "make it the best sweet shop in town". Inspired by the fact that word was spreading about the Thorntons shop, Norman took on his brother, Stanley, and they sold quirky sweet treats like Violet Cachous, Sweet Lips and Phul-Nanas.

  However, it was not until the 1920s that the brothers began making their hand-made chocolate truffles, crystallised fondants and their famous Thorntons special toffee.
