• The History Of Cadbury

  Cadbury have been producing chocolate for almost 200 years, ever since John Cadbury opened his first shop in Birmingham in 1924 to sell cocoa and drinking chocolate.

  He began producing on a commercial scale in 1831 and, by 1842, was selling 16 varieties of drinking chocolate and 11 different cocoas. The Cadbury brothers' booming business moved to a larger factory in the centre of Birmingham in 1847, while upon John's retirement in 1861, his son's, Richard and John, took over.

  The introduction of an innovative new processing technique in 1866 resulted in the launch of Cadbury Cocoa Essence, while Cadbury made their first Easter egg in 1875, using dark chocolate. When their existing factory became too small, they chose a 14.5-acre site four miles south of central Birmingham, which became known as Bournville and remains the company's base today.

  Cadbury chocolate, or rather milk chocolate, was launched in 1897, while the now famous Dairy Milk brand arrived eight years later. Bournville chocolate was launched in 1908, followed by Milk tray seven years later.
