  Penhaligon's was established in London in 1870 when a Cornish barber travelled to the capital to seek his fortune.

  William Penhaligon opened up a barber shop next to Jermyn Street's finest tailors and became inspired by the scent of a neighbouring Turkish baths. Within four years of moving to London he had created his first fragrance, Hammam Bouquet, and opened his own shop selling perfume and other fragranced items.

  By the end of Queen Victoria's reign, the company's founder, William Penhaligon, had been appointed barber and perfumer to the royal court, and in 1903, Penhaligon's was granted a royal warrant by Queen Alexandra.
