You may have heard about Single's Day a lot in the news recently but aren’t too sure what it is. If that’s the case – no worries. We've put together a quick guide that explains exactly what Single's Day is and how you can get involved.

What is Single’s Day?

When it comes to internationally celebrated shopping days, Single’s Day is the world’s biggest and you can think of it like China’s Black Friday. The event is essentially an anti-Valentines day with the idea being that as a single person you’ll have more money to treat yourself with.

When is Single’s Day?

Each year November 11th (11.11) marks Single’s Day in China. This is because in China, the phrase “bare stick” refers to a single man who never marries and can’t add branches to his family tree. The four 1s in 11.11 are meant to resemble bare sticks.

Who created Single’s Day?

Single’s Day first became a trend in China in the 1990s. The most widely accepted story is that 4 university students that were tired of being single bachelors decided that each year on 11.11 they would celebrate their single-ness.

Today, Alibaba is the name most synonymous with Single’s Day. Alibaba is an ecommerce-site like Amazon or Ebay and made over $38 billion worth of sales last year – that’s 2.5 times the U.S. sales of last year’s Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined.
