• How do I change broadband provider?

  This may depend on the particular provider you are currently with.

  Often, you will need to contact your current provider to let them know that you would like to cancel your contract. They will confirm the date that the line will be disconnected, which can then be connected to another provider.

  With your chosen new provider, you can specify a connection date which is when the new line will go live. If both providers use the same line, the new provider won't be able to connect until the current provider removes their connection, so you may need to organise this to happen a day later if you are not able to specify particular times for this to happen.

  If both providers use different lines, such as if you switch to Virgin from Sky, BT or any other OpenReach provider, you can have the new line connected even before the current one disconnects.

• What broadband speed do I need?

  The broadband speed you will need will heavily depend on your circumstances.

  One person in a household with only light internet access to read emails or watch youtube videos may only need a standard broadband connection of 10 Mbps.

  One or two people in a household using the internet and streaming a HD movie may require a connection of 16-38 Mbps.

  If you have four people in your household, using the internet, playing games, streaming movies and more, then a connection of 38 Mbps is probably the absolute minimum that would be suitable, but we would recommend speeds of up to 76 Mbps.

  If you have a very active household with multiple people streaming HD movies and playing games, or making large file transfers quite often, 100 Mbps or more would be beneficial.

  You can certainly use slower speeds than we have recommended, but everything you do will take longer to load, which may be frustrating. If you are unsure, you may want to set a budget and opt for the fastest connection that your budget will allow for.

• What is the difference between the download and upload speeds?

  The download speed is the speed at which your device will download data from the internet. For instance, if you are streaming a 4K movie, you will need a very fast download speed.

  The upload speed is the opposite; the speed at which your device will upload data to the internet. For example, if you are sending a large file to someone online, you will need a fast upload speed, but you don't require a fast download speed for this.

• What is Wi-Fi?

  Wi-Fi is the wireless internet connection that you'll use when your phone, laptop or other device connects to the internet via your router, without having to use a cable.

  All broadband providers offer Wi-Fi as standard.

• What is fibre broadband?

  Fibre broadband offers faster internet speeds than the standard ADSL broadband connection you used in the early 2000's. It uses fibre optic cables instead of copper wires to send data, making it up to 100x faster.

• Who is the best broadband provider?

  As of April 2021, Which? suggests that Plusnet Unlimited Broadband offers the best 'standard broadband deal', Plusnet Unlimited Fibre offers the best 'superfast fibre broadband deal' and Virgin Media M100 offers the best 'ultrafast fibre broadband deal'.

  However, you should be aware that not all providers, or even all of their plans, will be available everywhere.

  The best broadband provider available to you will depend on your location.

• How do I check my current broadband speed?

  You can use a service such as SpeedTest to measure your current broadband speed.

  This will take a minute to process and will compare your connection to others around the country, telling you how yours compares.

• Can you have broadband without a landline?

  Yes, some providers do allow you to sign up for a broadband-only package. However, the majority of households will still require a landline due to the technology required.

  If your home has the option to get super-fast broadband with a 'fibre to the premises' connection, then you won't need a landline. If you don't have the option to receive super-fast broadband packages, you may be required to have a landline.
