• Who is ‘George’?

  George Davies is an English fashion designer and retailer who was born in Crosby, Lancashire, in 1941.

  After walking away from Birmingham University, where he was studying to become a dentist, he returned to Liverpool and applied for a job at Littlewoods. He began as a graduate trainee before ending up as a buyer. He launched his first business, Schoolcare, in 1972 and a year later was invited to join fast-growing home-based fashion retailer Pippa Dee. In 1981, the chairman of Leeds-based men’s retailer Hepworth’s, Sir Terence Conran, approached Davies to join the retail chain and revamp the concept.

  Davies’ response was a blueprint for what became Next. He was made chief executive in 1984 but left four years later. He was then approached by Asda to create a new clothing range and George at Asda was born after being developed by Davies’ company, Red Creative. However, when Asda was bought by Walmart in 2000, the UK board resigned and Davies also resigned his direct association.
