• Company History

  William J Riley, who had emigrated from Britain to the Boston area of the United States, set up the business in 1906, calling it the New Balance Arch Support Company.

  It made arch supports and other shoe fit accessories, with his first product being a flexible arch support made using three support points in order to offer greater balance and comfort in the shoe. Riley hired Arthur Hall as a salesman in 1927 and he became a business partner seven years later.

  Hall sold the business to his daughter Eleanor and her husband Paul Kidd in 1956 and they continued to sell mainly arch supports until 1960, when they designed and manufactured the Trackster, which was the world's first running shoe made using a ripple sole and which offered various widths.

  However, when current chairman Jim Davis bought the company in 1972, six people were making just 30 pairs of shoes a day. As the Boston area became the centre of a US running boom in the 1970s, their product line expanded. Today, New Balance sell clothing, footwear and accessories for a wide range of sports, including football and cricket.
